During the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the early years of the Edo piriod, the prominent Momoyama Culture flourished. It was characterized by its gorgeousness, and many artistic masterpieces were created, including the "Mino-Momoyama ware". Tea ceremony was popular durihg this period, and the "styles" preferred by tea masters such as Sen-no Rikyu and Furuta Oribe were reflected onto tea ware. Outstanding tea utensils such as Setoguro, Kiseto, Shino and Oribe were produced in the Mino region.
The Kiseto ware has a vivid green decoration by flowers and plants drawn in thin lines. In general, Kiseto ware has a thin and elegant shape.
Setoguro tea bowls, favored in particular by the great tea master Sen-no Rikyu, are ch.aracterized by the semi-cylindrical shape and glossy black firnsh This color rs also called "drawn out black" because the work is drawn out from the kiln during firing and quickly cooled to obtain the glossy black color.
The features of Shino ware are the thick feldspathic glaze which is opaque and milky i color and the simple and bold iron designs used as the underglaze. This pottery gives a simple and warm feeling. |
