Foreigners who stay an extended period in Japan -not tourists who stay for only a short period- can receive various goverment services. To be considered, it is necessary to clarify your identification. The alien-registration system exists as an official identification and also allows foreigners to live without anxiety. |
 After Entering Japan |
| Foreigners who will stay in Japan for more than 90 days are requested to undergo foreign resident registration within 90 days at the local office. Those who are 16 years old and over should apply themselves. For those under 16 years old, a member of the same household should apply for them. The “Alien Registration Card” will be available a couple days after registration. Foreigners who are 16 years old and over should always carry the “Alien Registration Card”. Please bring the following to apply for foreign resident registration. |

4.5cm long×3.5cm wide. Picture taken from the front, above the breast, without a hat and within the last six months. (Unnecessary for applicants under 16 years old.) |

| When a Child is Born in Japan |
| When a child is born in Japan, a member of the same household should complete alien registration at the local office within 60 days. |
| Address Change |
| When there are any changes in the information on the “Alien Registration Card”, including address, nationality, name, qualifications or period of stay, occupation, or employment, please make a report within 14 days. |
| When the “Alien Registration Card” is Lost |
| If the “Alien Registation Card” is lost, damaged or stolen, report it within 14 days with your passport, two pictures and your Alien Registration Card (unnecessary when lost or stolen). |
| Renewal of Alien Registration |
Those who become 16 years old within 30 days the next confirmation day indicated on the “Alien Registration Card,” or those who have already become 16 years old, should renew it within 30 days from the 16th birthday.
For renewal application, you will need your passport, two pictures and your Alien Registration Card. |
| Returning the “Alien Registration Card” |
If a foreigner dies in Japan, a member of the same household is requested to return the “Alien Registration Card”within 14 days to the local public office.
When leaving Japan, unless you have received a re-entry permit at the Immigration Bureau, you should return the “Alien Registration Card” at the final port (airport) before departure. |
